Newman Center Sweethearts- National Marriage Week 2023

National Marriage Week 2023 was February 7-14, 2023. We reached out to some of our alumni to ask them to share their "Newman Couple" experience, memories as well as some advice on how to keep God and your faith a priority. Check out their stories below:

Dear Newman Center Alums:

You have been a part of a special community. Your involvement doesn’t have to end with graduation. Even though you no longer study in our student lounge or MPR, go on a student retreat, get a free bagel on Wednesday mornings, or attend Thursday Night Mass (TNM) with your friends ... we will always consider you part of our Newman Center family! We would love to hear what you’ve been up to, where you are, and how God has worked in your life since graduation. Use the email link above to send us that information. Newman Center alumni have lots of ways they can stay involved… for example, through the awesome Graduate Student and Young Professionals group, volunteering on a committee or advisory council, praying for our mission and ministries, completing a Fr. Ed Fitzpatrick Discipleship Award application form and supporting the faith of students financially with a donation. We need your help to keep Newman Center a spiritual refuge, a faith home away from home. Give us life updates or simply provide your email address so we can send you alumni information including any alumni events in your area. Have questions? Please email [email protected].

Fr. Ed Fitzpatrick Discipleship Award

Picture
Newman Center alumni who carry on our mission of being a disciple for the Church and for the world through involvement in a Catholic parish or non-profit are annually eligible for the Fr. Ed Fitzpatrick Discipleship Fund Award. Fr. Ed, the Newman Center’s director from 1981-2015, envisioned an endowed fund, which on a yearly basis, would provide a way to recognize the discipleship of Newman Center alums. Established in 2015, the Fund makes a $500 financial award gift to the respective Catholic parish or community non-profit in which recipients are actively involved.
Congratulations to our 2025 Fr. Ed Fitzpatrick Discipleship Award recipients Renee Thomas, Emily Munger, Carrie Field, and Jenna King!

Renee Thomas will be using the funds in her music classroom at St. Matthew Elementary School in Cedar Rapids, IA. Renee, a 2023 graduate of the University of Iowa and Iowa City native, teaches K-5 general music and 5th grade band.

Emily Munger will be using the funds in her classroom at Regina Catholic Education Center right here in Iowa City. This fall she will begin teaching first grade after earning her master's degree from the University of Georgia and B.A. in elementary education at the University of Iowa.

Carrie Field and Jenna King will be using the funds at Minnesota State University Mankato where they are both FOCUS missionaries. They are both in their first year as missionaries.
