The Newman Center offers many opportunities for graduate students and young professionals at The University of Iowa to meet others experiencing a similar journey and to grow in faith and fellowship together.
What We Do:
We discuss faith topics of interest, reflect on the Sunday Mass readings, and how to integrate our faith into our academic and professional lives.
We offer opportunities to build community with each other such as monthly First Friday Game Nights and other events.
We serve at the Catholic Worker House, Free Lunch Program, and other local service agencies.
When We Meet:
MONDAY NIGHT BIBLE STUDY
8pm-9pm Game Room@Newman
This member led group meets each week to reflect on scripture. You are welcome to join at any point in the semester, and can keep up to date with the week's topic by joining GroupMe where Josh Carrizales will share the week's verses for reflection. Contact Josh or Ann for more information.
TUESDAY NIGHT GROUP
8pm-9pm Fireside Lounge @Newman
We gather each Tuesday to reflect on the upcoming Sunday's readings in order to more fully receive the Word during the Sacrifice of the Mass. We welcome guest speakers, explore topics of interest to the group, and encourage each other in living our Catholic faith outside the walls of Newman. Please note: you are never considered late for this group! We appreciate how full your schedules are, and welcome you to join us for whatever portion of this hour you are able. You are also welcome to gather with us for Night Prayer in the Chapel following this meeting at 9:15 pm.
Questions about if this group is right for you? Ann is happy to discuss by email or in person.
New this semester:
THURSDAY NIGHT READING GROUP: C. S. Lewis
Beginning Thursday, February 3
Over the course of four sessions, we will read a classic by C.S. Lewis: The Great Divorce. We will meet 2/3, 2/17, 3/3, and 3/24. The book is available at the Iowa City Public Library and a number of stores both in Iowa City and online. Please indicate your interest in joining us by filling out this quick form. We will meet every other week, so if you are already a member of the Flannery O'Connor Reading Group (affectionately referred to as "FlanCon"), you can participate in this as well. Not a member of FlanCon and want to be? We would love for you to join us at any point in the semester.

THURSDAY NIGHT READING GROUP: FlanCon
8pm-9pm Thursday @Newman
Gather with us to discuss the short stories and essays of Flannery O'Connor. We resume meeting 1/27/22 and welcome you to join at any point in the semester. Not familiar with Flannery O'Connor or why she is an important author for this group? We would love for you to drop in and discover why before you commit to reading her work. This group meets every other Thursday and alternates with the C.S. Lewis Reading Group, so you can be involved in both. Contact Ann with any questions.
FIRST FRIDAY GAME NIGHT
2/4, 3/4, 4/1, 5/6
Join us at Newman for a great evening filled with any number of games. Pool? Ping pong? Catan? Of course...everyone loves Catan. Come join us for a relaxing evening playing old favorites and discovering new ones. Want to find out more about this event? Caitlyn Grubbs would love to tell you about it or take suggestions for what you'd like to play. Please note! Your ID will not allow you to access Newman at this time on Friday evening.
